Urban Legends Assignment
Victoria Evens, age 67, also known as Vicky to her family and friends went out to the drug store late one evening to get her prescription medication. She had rheumatoid arthritis in her left hand but it only came and went. After she walked inside and waited in line for about 20 minutes, she walked out of the doors only to find that three large men all wearing black were trying to steal her car!
She quickly walked to her car and pulled a pistol out of her handbag. She screamed, “I have a gun and I’m not afraid to use it!” The men had puzzled looks on their faces but ran away quickly. Vicky calmly walked into her car and was only slightly shaken. She’d taken to keeping a gun in her purse for safekeeping

In what way is she a legend. Yes, she defended herself but too many people have taken to carrying unregistered and unlicensed weapons. What makes a person a legend is when their story goes on and on and people talk about something they did for generations. I can’t tell you who your legends should be, but it should be someone who was so very kind and volunteering they did something lasting for the community that people talked about them for a long time, or it should be somebody so infamous that his deeds became legend. IE., the guy who parachuted from the airline with the money he was paid for hijacking the plane. People still believe he is alive somewhere. It could be somebody like Elvis who died but keeps getting spotted everywhere. Bonnie and Clyde or a modern version of them.
Maybe Victoria Evens was brave but she is not a legend, yet.

Hmmmm, not a very good urban legend. Now if “Vicky” pulled a trained pet SKUNK out of her purse and pointed the business end of it towards them, then that would sound more like an urban legend!

If you look it up on http://www.snopes.com, you’ll see that Ms. Evens made a slight miscalculation.

doesn’t sound like an urban legend. It might be an urban legend if it turned out it wasnt her car … or something to make it a more memorable story. Check http://www.snopes.com for a bunch of urban legends.

the urban legend part would be that the men that were gonna rob/mug her did not want to because they saw a bigger entity with her i.e. guardian angel.
the one I heard like this was a girl walking from lover’s lane from her forceful/aggressive boyfriend. On her way she passed some thugs. They kept walking. But the thugs killed her boyfriend. In court, she asked them why they did not attack her. And they replied, No way not with that big man walking beside you.

I mean, I guess it’s alright but usually urban legends are more far fetched. It’s the sensationalized stories that get passed around for years and no one know where it came from. No one is going to pass around a story about an old lady carrying around a gun in her purse. If she was a vigil ante who went around parking lots in some town at night to rescue other old people from crime, that’s a better story. Have her come out of the store to find three guys burglaring someone else’s car. She pulled out her gun and managed to handcuff all three to the car until the police arrived. When they got there, the old lady had already left but the next night there was news of another citizen’s arrest where two young guys tried to mug an old man, only to be hit from behind by the old lady’s car. You get what I mean? Build up the actual exciting part of the story, not merely details about her arthritis.

Safety reasons I don’t see a problem carrying a gun for protection!
